Skills USA Students Recieve Awards

Freshman and Senior Class Raise $1800 for Memorial Scholarship

Following the terrible tragedy that took the lives of Wolcott High School students Thamara Correa and Jessica and Anthony Apruzzese, several members of the Freshman and Senior Class approached their advisors, Jennifer Gugliotti and Michelle Thies, wanting to do something to remember their friends. It was decided that pink memorial writsbands with the names of Thamara, Jessica, and Anthony would be sold to raise money for a memorial scholarship. The Senior Class donated the money necessary to purchase the bracelets to maximize the profits. The bracelets were sold during lunches at Wolcott High School and Tyrrell Middle School. Donation buckets were also placed at area businesses. A total of $1800 was raised. The money was turned over to the Wolcott Education Foundation, a wonderful organization that administers many scholarships. Since its creation in 1996, it has awarded over 25,000 in scholarships to Wolcott students. The money was divided into three scholarships each worth $600. A scholarship in Anthony’s name will be given out at this year’s Senior Awards Night, and one each in Jessica and Thamara’s name will be given out on the Senior Awards Night for the Class of 2011. Thank you to everyone who bought a bracelet or made a donation.

Alcott Pre-School Visits Wolcott High School

On March 26, 18 students in Meteorology classes took a field trip with Science Teacher Mr. Caplan to WFSB studios in Rocky Hill.  Mr. Thomas and Ms. Villano also accompanied the students.

The tour of the studio was hosted by meteorologist Mark Dixon.  The students were given a tour of the entire studio and were taken through the entire process of how a newscast is produced.  Students had an opportunity to ask questions of Mr. Dixon and other employees of the station.  The students were also able to see the sites where the station received its weather information and updates.

Everyone was invited to view a live broadcast at noon.  We were mentioned on the forecast as well.

Mark Dixon had visited Wolcott High School in December where he spoke at length of the filed of broadcast meteorology.

Art Club

Art students at Wolcott High School recently attended the Scholastic Art Awards exhibit in the Silpe Gallery of the University of Hartford.  Exemplary students from throughout the state compete to enter in this juried show which showcases the best work of Connecticut’s young artists.  Two pastel artworks by Diana Filar, “Paper Bags” and “My Grandfather’s Son”, were chosen by the jury for the show.  The art students were able to see Ms. Filar’s artwork along with that of other gifted high school students selected from throughout the state.  The visit to the Scholastic Art Awards show was followed by an informal lecture tour of works from famous artists at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford.

On December 18, 2007, the Wolcott High School National Honor Society hosted their annual Christmas Party for Wolcott’s children with special needs. The party is one of the main community service projects undertaken by the Honor Society and has been a tradition for many years. The NHS members were busy fundraising, planning and decorating for more than a month. This year, approximately 40 students came to the party and were treated to crafts, games, a musical performance, a pizza lunch and desert, and, best of all, a visit from Santa. The children as well as our Honor Society members look forward to this fun and memorable experience. At the end of the day, the students left with huge smiles on their faces. The National Honor Society would like to thank the following businesses for generously sponsoring this event: Travers Inc, The Care Connection LLC, National Dye, and Carlucci’s Pizza. Also, big thanks to all of the town’s people who bought items or made a donation at our Election Day Bake Sale and to the faculty and staff for supporting our luncheon fundraisers. We would also like to thank Mr. Duffy and the Jazz Band and Ms. Solocius and the Chorus for providing the entertainment at the party, as well as all of the Special Education teachers and aides for taking the time to bring their students to our party.
