Update of events and activities from the Music Department
It has been a busy fall for the Wolcott High School Music Department. Our biggest event of the year so far has been the preparation for this year’s trip to Bermuda. Students will be performing in a music festival on the “Explorer of the Seas” cruise ship. The Wolcott High School Concert Band and Chamber Singers will be performing for adjudication. The trip will take place on June 28-July 3rd 2008. Fundraisers and events will be taking place all year in preparation for this event!
The Marching Band has been busy practicing this year’s half time show: excerpts from the musical “The Who’s Tommy.” The band has already successfully performed Part I of their show at the last home football game, and is looking forward to performing the entire 8 minute show during the Thanksgiving Day game at half time. The band also participated in Band Day 2007 at UMASS. Students had the opportunity to perform with high school marching bands all over the northeast, and work under George Parks, the band director at UMASS. It was an exciting and rewarding day for all. The Marching Band also participated in Wolcott’s first annual Halloween Parade and Festival held on October 20th.
The choral department has filled up its calendar so far as well. The Show Choir performed a 25 minute musical during the first annual Halloween Festival, “The Halloween Misfits” that featured characters such as witches, ghosts, monsters, spooks, and pumpkins. Students also performed at many events since the beginning of the school year. Singers were featured at the Wolcott Education Foundation’s School Year Kickoff Festival, the Dedication ceremony for the newly refurbished Peterson Park, and the Jr. Women’s club Touch-A-Truck event. The Show Choir, Chamber Singers, and Jazz Choir are now preparing for the upcoming holiday season.
Students from the band and chorus are also preparing for their auditions to the Connecticut Music Educators Association’s Southern Region Music Festival. If students receive an acceptable score they will be able to participate in the festival this coming January. They will be auditioning on November 17th at Foran High School in Milford.
The Wolcott High School Parent Music Association is pleased to announce its new officers: Co-presidents Colleen Caffrey and Mary Caye DeSocio, Vice-President Carla Chiappalone, Sectretary Sheila Levanti, and Treasurer Teri Montana. Many thanks go out to Gloria and Randy Clair, and Angela LoRusso for their many years of dedicated service to the WHPMA and their continued involvement after stepping down from officership. The WHPMA has already held two successful fundraisers which aid students in scholarships and other music department activities. The WHPMA sold mums at the first two home football games and they sold tickets to “Shop for a Cause” at Macy’s. Just a reminder to all music parents that the WHPMA meets the first Thursday of every month in the WHS Guidance Conference Room, any parent of a student involved in music is welcome to attend.
